Snoring & Sleep Apnea

It’s a fair assessment that almost everybody snores once in a while, and the occasional bout of snoring is not usually something to worry about.
Normal Breathing
Snoring - Partial Obstruction
OSA - Complete Obstruction
Snoring occurs when the tissues in and around the airway relax, then begin to vibrate as air is inhaled and exhaled. The size and shape of the oral and airway structures, or the position an individual is resting in can lead to infrequent snoring. However, it’s important to be aware of when snoring may be a cause for concern.

Treatment Options

In order to provide the most appropriate treatment, we need to assess where the flow of oxygen is being blocked while you sleep. Is it in your nasal passage, in the back of the throat, your tonsils or is it lower down below your tongue? A proper diagnosis is important to recommending the correct treatment. There are several options available for OSA patients, and depending on the individual, one option may be more appropriate than another.

Some individuals with sleep apnea use a breathing machine called a CPAP to provide them with enough oxygen while they sleep. If there is floppy tissue in the back of your throat, a special laser treatment called NightLase can be performed to tighten up that tissue in 3 treatments to allow air to pass more easily and decrease or eliminate your snoring.

Others wear a mouthpiece before bed that keeps the jaws in an optimal position and prevents the tongue from sliding to the back of the mouth.

Finally, the Vivos System, a removable palatal expansion device, is a system is a treatment option that uses customized oral devices to help patients redevelop their oral structures to create more room in the mouth.
