Loose Skin (Face or Neck)
Loosening or sagging skin can be a difficult part of life to face for adults, especially those in their 30s and 40s who put forth significant effort in maintaining a healthy, youthful appearance.
When skin sagging occurs around the face and neck, it often interferes with an individual’s ability to feel confident, being that sagging in these areas is more noticeable to others than sagging around the limbs or abdomen.
Fortunately, there are ways to prevent and/or repair sagging skin depending on the severity of skin loosening, a patient’s budget, and individual preference.
What Causes Loose Skin?
Skin begins to loosen and sag when collagen and elastin (structural proteins in the skin and tissues) break down and do not replenish themselves as quickly or efficiently as they did in youth.
When the skin around the face and neck loses its elasticity and begins to sag, the primary cause is often aging or significant weight loss.
Aging usually leads to progressive skin sagging as time passes, while weight loss tends to cause temporary skin sagging as the body tightens and adjusts to the loss of adipose tissues.
In both cases, sagging skin is treatable in a variety of ways, depending on the level of sagging and the route that the individual wants to take.
For example, some individuals want to improve the condition of their skin, but they’re uncomfortable with the idea of injectable skin fillers. In these cases, the individual might choose chemical peels and facials to rejuvenate the skin and improve its texture.
In other situations, the loosening is significant enough to require micro-needling to insert additional collagen into facial tissues.
Even still, if skin loosening occurs around the cheekbones or jawline, dermal fillers may be a great option for restoring shape and structure to those areas of the face.
