Sun Spots or Age Spots

Age spots, also known as sun spots, are hyperpigmented flecks on the surface of skin that’s frequently exposed to sunlight. They’re flat and usually resemble freckles, but they differ from freckles in the fact that they appear later in life. Individuals typically notice the appearance of sun spots in their 40s and 50s, though they can start appearing as early as one’s 30s.

What Causes Sun Spots and Age Spots?

Sun spots are the result of overactivity in a person’s pigmentation cells. Frequent exposure to UV light (sunlight) increases the skin’s production of melanin, which is the natural pigment that gives skin its color. Higher melanin levels produce darker skin tones while lower melanin levels produce lighter skin tones.

Skin pigmentation cells can bunch together, which is why sun spots look like freckles rather than resembling even, tanned skin.

The development of sun spots is most common in light-skinned individuals, especially those who have a history of frequent sun exposure.

Sun Spot and Age Spot Prevention

Though age spots are an indication that a person’s skin has received significant sun exposure, they’re usually harmless. However, prevention of sun spot development is a common goal for people in their 40s and 50s who have noticed the initial signs of pigmentation changes.

To protect your skin from developing sun spots, it’s a good idea to avoid excessive sun exposure. When spending time outside, take precautions:

  • Wear sunscreen
  • Put on a sun hat to protect your face, head, and neck from sun exposure
  • Wear a thin, long-sleeved shirt to keep your arms covered
  • Try breathable, long pants to protect your legs
  • Limit the time you spend in direct sunlight
  • Age Spot / Sun Spot Treatment
